"In an age of interdependence, global citizenship, based on trust and a sense of shared responsibility, is a crucial pillar of progress." -- Kofi Annan, 2002
History
While the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (Grades 11 and 12) has been in
existence since 1968, the Middle Years Program (grades 6-10) was added worldwide in 1994
to give younger students access to an IB education.
As of November, 2008, IB works with 2,425 schools in 131 countries to offer the three IB programs to approximately 665,000 students. Sandburg Middle School was officially authorized as an “IB World School” in 2004. Sandburg was the first of currently five authorized MYPs in Minnesota, with many more schools now going through the IB authorization process around the state!
Sandburg
Middle School initiated the IBMYP in 1999 in response to the need for a
challenging academic option for capable students. The
application tier of the program currently serves close
to 550 students in grades 6-10. Grades 6-8 participate at Sandburg and grades 9-10
continue the program at our partner high school, Robbinsdale Cooper. As with the Diploma Program,
the MYP seeks to provide students with a broad base of
knowledge, an international perspective and critical thinking skills.
